Beginners Guide to Italian Pasta
Pasta is one of the cornerstones of Italian cuisine due to its simplicity, versatility and its tastiness! Made from flour, eggs and water, pasta is easy to cook, often taking a few minutes in boiling water to be ready to serve. Pasta is also famous for the multiple shapes and types in which it is served. As such, here is a quick guide to Italian
pasta.
Spaghetti – Arguably the most famous form of pasta, Spaghetti comes in stringy strands that is traditionally served with bolognase, which is mince meat cooked in a tomato based sauce.
Penne – A tube-shaped pasta that has the edges cut at an angle. Penne is normally used in pasta bakes or salads.
Conchiglie – Also known as 'sea shell pasta' due to its shape, Conchiglie is normally served with thick tomato-based sauces or seafood dishes.
Cannelloni – These thick pasta tubes can either be cooked by themselves or filled with meat and vegetables to be served as a meal in themselves.
Farfalle – This bow-tie pasta is used in pasta bakes and salad and is famed for its unusual shape.
Lasagne – These flat sheets of pasta are used in the traditional dish lasagne, which consists of layers of pasta, meat and cheese. Highly recommended!
Macaroni – These curved pasta tubes are incredibly popular due to their versatility, which sees them uses in all sorts of dishes, but more often than not, cheese-based bakes.
Fusilli – This corkscrew-shaped pasta is often found in salads, but has been known to be utilised in soups such as a minestrone.
