3 Best Italian Wines: (Valeria's recommendations)

Personally, this writer loves a good red wine more than anything, so with this bias in mind, the below Italian wines are what I consider to be among the best reds in the world. In order to get the most from these wines, I will also suggest the type of food that you should have with it, be it Chianti wineseafood, steak or otherwise.

Fontodi Chianti Classico 2001

If you love Italian food, and this writer does, there is no better accompaniment to a feast of pizza and steak than a glass of Fontodi Chianti Classico. This wine is a medium-bodied red with a dark ruby colour and a strong taste of cherry and blackberry. An excellent accompaniment to any meal, but be sure to let it breathe for a while before drinking.

Castello di Monastero Chianti Superiore 2001

A lot of pasta dishes are heavily tomato-based and as such, you need a good wine to accompany this. Castello di Monastero Chianti Superiore is described by the Wine Spectator as “an easy-drinking red, with grape skin and a hint of chocolate” and due to its strong flavours goes well with pasta dishes, prosciutto and an array of Italian cheeses.

Famigila Anselma Barolo 2000

Barolo wine is not for everyone due to its strong and full bodied taste, however it is the perfect wine for creamy pasta dishes, steaks and seafood. In Italy, Barolo wine is known as ‘the king of wines’ and for me, Famigila Anselman Barolo 2000 characterises this best of all. With strong berry flavours and a full body, Famigila Anselma Barolo 2000 is ideal for any Italian meal, but goes well with cheeses if you’re looking for a post-dinner drink.
