Doing Business in Italy

Doing business in Italy is like any other country in many regards, but there are some rules and etiquette to follow and which are based largely on the Italin culture and way of doing things.

When it comes to business meetings in Italy, lateness is frowned upon, and while it is doubtful you’d be late for an important business meeting, making sure you get there on time, taking in to account any traffic problems you may face. If you are late, make sure your excuse is a good one.

Also remember that business times are different to that in the UK and lunches in Italy are known to over-run. As such, the best times for a potential meeting are 10-11am and after Businessman in Italy3pm in the afternoon.

Smartness is also important, but especially so in Italy – after all, it is home to some of Europe’s most famous fashion houses. While you’re not expected to being wearing Armani, it is not recommended to wear a cheap suit to a meeting.

Simple manners are also important; the Italians greet and depart by shaking hands and this is expected in any business meeting. The Italian people are also known for being overly friendly, especially compared to the English so if you are hugged, do not be surprised.

In business, the Italians tend to favour meetings with established contacts, hence it might be worth using a middle man to set a meeting up rather than yourself. Once it is arranged, make sure you confirm it with a phone call or email.
