Italian business culture – guide and tips
Every culture is different in many respects and this includes the way business is conducted in different countries. Below, we give you a brief outline on business culture in Italy and some tips on Italian business culture.
Sense of Family
The family is still very important in every aspect of Italian life. This is reflected on Italian business culture as in Italy the majority of companies are small family enterprises. Even big Italian companies, such as Benetton and FIAT,
revolve around a family which founded the business and still has a large influence on it.
Relationships
Relationships are very important in Italy and in Italian business, family connections can make a huge difference. The old adage "It's not what you know, but who you know" holds a lot of value in Italy. This is why it is advisable, when dealing with Italian companies, to cultivate public relations and create connections with people. For example, it is useful to follow things up, be in touch and meet people in person if at all possible. Also, personal qualities and the ability to create relationships are more valued than technical abilities.
Sense of humour
This is very important in Italian culture as people do not want to appear too serious. This ties with one of the points above, regarding the importance of social interaction and strong ties in Italian business.
Food
Sharing food at mealtimes in Italy is very important as a way to build and strengthen relationships, including business ties.
